Yeah, it's a thing said to children to get them to sit still. It's not really gendered IME, except so far as "sitting still" is gendered.
(On a semi related note, it's similar to "quiet hands" except "quiet hands" is way, waayyy creepier.)

Re: 907 - Where Lily learns to Cut her Self
Huge changes don't generally happen over short periods of time.
Besides, her friends are the people on whom she has the greatest impact. Treating them with more respect and acknowledging their agency and autonomy is much better in terms of her actual impact on the world.

Re: 905: Well, there's your problem.
It is the patriarchy that tells us every single day that a woman's value comes from her appearance. "The patrirachy" is a phrase that usually bugs me. Certainly our culture is patriarchal, but a lot of talk about "the patriarchy" implies that certain qualities of a given culture...

Mansplaining isn't talking shop as a way to start a conversation. Mansplaining is condescendingly explaining something to someone when they already understand what's being mansplained. It's a very particular thing, and it's not what you're talking about, Urusigh. Just talking about impersonal thing...

Why on earth does Lily think Gina actually being good at bowling would discourage males from condescendingly explaining to Gina how to do it right? It is called "mansplaining", there's even a word for it, because it is so common. Lots of possible beliefs could lead to this. "Men's eg...

1. Yes, it's hypocritical to say "I can criticize your choices, but you can't criticize the choices of others." Either you have a right to criticize traditional women and they have that same right to criticize non-traditional women or neither of you have a right to criticize anyone. We're...

You, uh, you do realize that most women who wear the hijab or other veils do so by choice, right? That's highly debatable. Certainly most women are not legally compelled to wear them (in fact niqabs are banned in more islamic countries than anywhere else) but there's a huge difference between "...

"Because this is D&D, and in D&D, you play good guys. You wanna play the bad guy? I'll grab my World of Darkness stuff and we can play that instead." Eh, my own inexperience being noted, I'm fairly certain "in D&D, you play good guys" has more to do with your own pla...

Re: 897: Two Sides Of The Coin Minted From Crap
Nah, it's more like there's a variety of responses to hearing a friend is having a problem. Sometimes your friend wants the problem minimized (so they can feel like it's not that big a deal and stop worrying about it), sometimes they just want sympathy (e.g. validation of how they feel and maybe a h...

Eh, it depends. Porn is more about aesthetic than actual practical pleasure, but a fair amount of it transfers over. I'd imagine your average porn star knows their way around sex far better than the average person. Though it's worth noting that porn lies in a way that most food porn does not. A lot ...
