Re: Tipping can be optional ...

Bartenders aren't tipped over there? You must have a much smaller percentage of smoking hot women tending bar over there. At least your beer's better.

Re: Memento Moroni

The question wasn't directed at me, but I'll throw my 2 cents in. Of course there's truth in stereotypes. They wouldn't exist if there wasn't some level of truth to them. But I don't see how you can use the general tendencies of a group to justify any sort of behavior towards individuals. There are ...

Re: Taxes and morality

I am aware that if you send your kids to a private School you can get a tax rebate. So am I, and I hate it. School taxes oughtn't to be a fee-for-service. An educated and employable populace is a public good we all enjoy. On a similar note, local property taxes are a completely ridiculous means of ...

Re: Taxes and morality

It's normal and necessary. And I'm not sure if I'd say it's good, but in a free and representative society it's at least just. You have a voice in the government. Okay, I just read through the thread again, and I'm still a little fuzzy on the details of how your system would work. As I understand it, if I make shoes, I'll distribute those shoes to people based on my subjective opinion - formed by their testimonies - that they are worthy of shoe-have. Presumab...

Not completely on point, but this reminded me of a story by Eric Burns of Websnark fame.

Re: where are you from?

I grew up in a small town tucked up in the Northwest corner of Washington State. I could see the Canadian border crossing and the harbor from my window. But I've been living in the suburbs of Houston, TX for the last eight years or so. On another note, hi, I'm Justin. I've been a fan for some time. ...

Re: Board game design

At five years old, my daughter has started designing her own board and card games. They're as uniformly horrible as you might imagine, but I dutifully play them with her. There was a marked improvement after I started enforcing the "you will test the game by yourself before inflicting it on oth...
