Does this sound familiar? I was reading this article and couldn't stop seeing parallels to President *gag* Trump. Is this how he did it? Did he manage to gaslight half the country? It's a better explanation for the alt-right than I've managed to come up with so far.

Well, it certainly doesn't make for a complete account of the rise of the 'alt-right'. But you're right that Trump does display classic gaslighting behaviour, which several people have commented on.

Googling for 'Trump gaslighting' throws up lots of articles on the subject.

Trump actually has some eerie similarities to the way HITLER gave speeches. I hate to envoke Godwin's law, but, um...yeah. Considering he had either Mein Kampf, or Hitler's Speeches by his BEDSIDE?

Yeah...this is when Godwin's Law becomes reasonable. There's also the fact that members of the alt right are, at times, literally Nazis. As in "Swastikas and Sieg Hiels".

1) Trump did not get half the country's votes -- he only received votes from roughly 1/4 of eligible voters.

2) A sizeable fraction of those who voted for Trump were not what could fairly be called "the alt-right", and did not vote for Trump based on "alt-right" positions.
