I've always thought PETA seemed pretty terrible. I've never actually seen a source for the put-down shelters though. (If nothing else PETA is terrible because of their stupid Pokemon parody game).

My own stance is that human animal ownership is not very well handled, and along with our lack of population control and extreme encroachment on the 'natural'/'wild' world we've got big problems coming for both food and bio-diversity. That said animals and crop plants get a great deal as human partners, one in every two birds on the planet is probably a chicken. Most crops and farm animals have been adapted enough by our selective breeding that they can't really go back to not being in partnership with us and do well. I think the best solution, at least for now would be to get ethically sound population control and land use which is a little less, laissez faire capitalism, and a little more... ugh, tyrannical?

Otherwise if you just snapped your fingers and had everyone stop eating meat and keeping pets then all the land freed up from switching to a more efficient vegetarian population will just turn into golf courses, malls, and apartment blocks; and farm animals would suddenly become endangered and then extinct.

I just googled how many chickens and birds are in the world: 19 billion chickens, 200-400 billion birds.

My bad, though they are the most common bird on the planet.

Looking at the google results for chickens quickly there are 19-24 billion and about 50 billion are reared annually for consumption. That's a lot of chickens.

It's largely because the morons in PETA believe that animals are better of dead than as pets.

In general, they're a vile ignorant collection of extremists and hypocrites.

In addition to those articles, I'll add this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVjxspDHy_o

(Does anyone know how you currently embed a youtube video on a phpBB forum such as this? It's not currently working for me.)
