I just can't see any way here except that Doc is wrong.
Even if "it" is appropriate for Zoa, that's still A pronoun. Even if Zoa doesn't count as a "person", there's clearly a mind there. If I were going to go somewhere and bring my housecat along, I'd certainly use "we" to describe the act of us traveling together.
Hell, if I were bringing a houseplant along, there's a nonzero chance I'd still use "we".
