Snowy, I'ma stop you right there. You are using the wrong unit. Watts are a unit for transfer over time, joules are a unit of energy, e.g. A battery's lifespan is determined by how many joules are left in it.snowyowl wrote:I estimate that a human body uses about 100W of power on average. That's 700 gigawatts for the human race's metabolisms. Add an order of magnitude or so to power our cars, lights, and other tech.
Is destruction of an object of value inherently unethical?

What's wrong with a human body using 100 Joules per second on average?

Nothing, I just felt like being a smartass. That's all.

My reasoning is questionable, but I definitely used the right unit. A normal human diet is 2000 kilocalories per day. That energy should get consumed and then burned relatively quickly - even if you're starving / overstuffing yourself, you can't keep it up forever.Horizon wrote:Snowy, I'ma stop you right there. An animal body is not comparable to a battery. It's more like an engine that needs to be refuelled every so often. It makes sense to talk about the amount of fuel currently stored in the engine, but here, we're considering the environmental impact of the engine, so it's more relevant to this conversation to talk about the rate at which that fuel is consumed.
And 2000 kilocalories per day = 8.3 megajoules per day = 100 watts, which is where I got the figure you quoted from.
... in bed.

I know. What I said was stupid. We all do stupid things. My bad.

Unforgivable!
Particularly considerign that so much of morality is emotional based 'not to hurt people' 'don't be mean' 'build community' 'listen' 'be humble', a logical answer doesn't present itself, the problems exist in an emotional framework.

I only understand a little Latin. So I got everything said recently, except Horizon's second sentence.
